Instagram VS Reality: Revealing My Unedited Photos

by - 10:00

This week I posted this on Instagram. Two photos, the first is a typical posed shot, the second was a few seconds later when I let myself relax and return to my usual, terrible posture. I captioned it with this: "Instagram VS Reality...swipe to see the REAL me. Sometimes we all need a little reminder that Instagram isn’t always honest. Never compare your true self to someone’s carefully curated Instagram page, even Kylie Jenner knows her angles! 💘"

Instagram is quickly becoming one of my favourite apps to play around with, but unfortunately it can be quite a deceiving app making you see so many people's lives as 'perfect'. One of the ways we do this is by editing our photos to make them look better, I'm definitely guilty of this and while editing photos is incredible and beautiful and artistic - one of my favourite things about Instagram is the creativity that comes along with it - sadly this also gives us the power to show people our lives in an unrealistic way.

I edit pretty much every single one of my photos, I don't Photoshop them to make me look thinner or anything drastic like that, but I do edit the lighting and sometimes I am liable to use Facetune to smooth out my skin a little. Even though I'm fully aware that I and many others do this, I still find myself comparing my life to others, "oh their skin is so beautiful" "their body is perfect" etc etc.

This gave me an idea - today I've decided to share with you my edited and unedited Instagram photos. This may be pointless to some of you, but I believe that it has some kind of importance to it. And if you're really not interested, just turn it into a little game of spot the difference!

Can you guess how I've edited each photo? I know that you may not be able to see a huge difference, but when you're only seeing the edited versions of photos, it's easy to believe that that's reality. Remember that it isn't all about the editing either, posture, angles & general lighting are EVERYTHING! Like I said in the caption, even queen Kylie knows the angles that work best for her. Next time you're on Instagram, remember that the majority of what you see is very carefully planned and curated to make you see what they want you to see. It isn't fake, but it isn't always the truth.

I'm making it my mission to post these more often and I'm challenging you to try it to. Get posting your best posed VS unposed, edited VS unedited, makeup VS no makeup pics to show people the Instagram you and the REAL you. Tag your posts with the hashtag #MyTrueSelf as I will be doing the same. Make sure to follow me on Instagram to see how I get on, and make sure to tag me in your pics so I can see them and cheer you on!
